About Us

Were did it all start?

Apostel Battery has a fascinating history! It was originally an old military base with three batteries (large guns/cannons) dating back to World War II. Built between 1939 and 1945, the site was part of Cape Town’s coastal defense system, protecting against potential threats during the war.

After years of being unused, the area was transformed into a youth camp facility in 1993. Many of the original military features were incorporated into camp activities, creating an adventurous atmosphere for experiential learning and team-building. Today, it serves as a unique retreat space for groups, blending history with outdoor education and leadership development. It’s incredible how a former military site has been repurposed into a vibrant space for youth and community engagement!

Located in Table Mountain National Park, the campsite on the 12 Apostles Mountains offers stunning views of Llandudno Beach, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Apostle Mountains. It's just a 15-minute drive from Cape Town and 5 kilometers from Hout Bay, easily accessible for groups wanting to walk to the beach.

Our History

Although TMYDP provides youth development services and camps in different areas and communities in , mainly, the Western Cape, the main activities and most programs take place at Apostle Battery campsite above Llandudno.

Apostle Battery has it’s origin in World War 2 where it served as a military base. The base was equipped with three 9 inch guns (batteries) which are still on the site. After the war the Apostle Battery served as a military base until 1993 when it was handed over to the SA Police service. As the Police service had no operational need for the site at that stage, permission was given to the Christian Police Association (CPA) to renovate and use the facilities for moral building programs for police and youth development (camps). When the Table Mountain National Park was formed, the CPA went into a long term lease contract with TMNP.

For corporate oversite and effective legal management, but also to extend development services off-site, the TMYDP was established. There is still the close association between the CPA and TMYDP and the Apostle Battery serves as base/hub for the services mentioned on this website.
